Decking FAQs
How much does it cost to build a deck?
Most decks range from about $8,000 for a basic pressure-treated deck to $40,000+ for a large composite or hardwood multi-level deck, depending on size, material, height, and railings. We provide a free, written estimate before any work begins.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
In most of California, decks more than 30 inches above grade — and any deck attached to the house — require a building permit. We handle the drawings, structural engineering, and permits for you.
Composite or wood decking — which is better?
Composite (Trex, TimberTech) costs more up front but resists rot, splinters, and fading and needs almost no maintenance. Natural wood like redwood, cedar, and ipe is beautiful and often cheaper initially but needs periodic staining and sealing. We help you weigh looks, budget, and upkeep.
How long does it take to build a deck?
A typical residential deck takes about 1 to 3 weeks once permits are approved, depending on size, height, and material. Multi-level or hillside decks take longer. We give you a clear schedule up front.
How long does a deck last?
A pressure-treated deck lasts about 15 to 25 years with maintenance, composite decks 25 to 50 years, and hardwoods like ipe 40+ years. Proper footings, flashing, and material choice make a big difference.
Can you build a deck on a hillside or second story?
Yes. We build elevated, hillside, and over-garage decks with engineered footings, proper attachment to the structure, and code-compliant railings and guardrails.
Do you repair existing decks?
Yes. We replace damaged boards, repair joists, beams, and footings, fix dry rot and water damage, and sand, stain, and seal to bring an aging deck back to life.
How much maintenance does a deck need?
Composite decks just need occasional cleaning. Wood decks should be cleaned and re-stained or sealed every 1 to 3 years to protect against the sun and moisture. We can set you up with the right finish.
Do you add railings, stairs, and pergolas?
Yes. We install wood, metal, cable, and glass railings, custom stairs and landings, pergolas and shade structures, deck lighting, and outdoor kitchens.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Hollywood Contractor Corp is a licensed California general contractor (CSLB License #1092628) and is bonded and fully insured.
